More common questions
How does debt settlement work?

Debt settlement involves seeking an agreement with a creditor or collector to accept less than the full balance. No creditor has to agree. Some programs ask consumers to stop paying while saving funds, which can increase interest and fees, hurt credit, and lead to collection or lawsuits. Understand the process and risks.

Is settlement the same as a consolidation loan?

No. Settlement seeks a reduced payoff. A consolidation loan replaces debts with a new loan, with its own rate, fees, payment schedule, and qualification requirements. Compare total costs, not just the monthly payment.

Can a company guarantee that my debts will be settled?

No. Creditors can refuse a settlement. No provider can promise a particular outcome, timeline, or end to collection activity. Be cautious about guarantees and pressure to act immediately.

Could forgiven debt create a tax bill?

Possibly. Canceled debt may count as taxable income, although exclusions and exceptions may apply. A tax professional can assess your circumstances. Read the IRS explanation of canceled debt.

What should I check before choosing a provider?

Get the fees, qualification rules, cancellation terms, expected timing, and risks in writing. Compare alternatives and verify licensing or registration where applicable. Use our decision checklist.

Optional speed measurements help us improve this website. If you allow them, we send only page speed measurements and a broad page category to our own website. We do not include calculator amounts, form answers, names, browsing history, or advertising identifiers. This choice is saved in this browser until you change it or clear site data. Server access logs may still record your IP address.

Off by default. No optional measurements are sent.

Optional Google measurement

Google measurement is separate from our own optional speed measurements. If you allow it, Google receives an isolated page-view event for a broad public page category and technical connection information, including an IP address. It receives no form answers, calculator entries, full browsing URL, referrer, name, email, or phone from this integration. This does not enable advertising. Your choice is saved in this browser for up to 90 days. You can turn it off here at any time; this stops this integration’s future requests, but cannot erase data already received by Google.
