Debt-relief resources by state: verify a business and find help

Where you live can affect applicable rules, registrations and remedies. Verify the particular business and service with the appropriate official agency.
This directory is not a service-area list. The company reports coverage of all 50 U.S. states. This directory does not verify licensing, eligibility or availability of every service. You may submit a first-contact inquiry; this does not establish state-specific service eligibility or enrollment.
Find your state
Start with USAGov’s state consumer protection directory or find your attorney general through the National Association of Attorneys General. An office may direct you to a different regulator for your particular service.
Primary state resources
- New York: Department of Financial Services provides consumer and supervised-business resources. Check whether it regulates the particular service.
- Texas: Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner provides consumer and regulated-business information. Search the legal business name, not only a marketing brand.
- Florida: Office of Financial Regulation provides consumer-finance and license-verification resources. Different activities can fall under different agencies.
- Ohio: Attorney General consumer resources explain assistance and complaints. Making a complaint is separate from answering court papers.
These starting points are not a complete statement of state law or a finding that any agency licenses a particular provider. Registration and complaint records have different meanings; no complaint does not mean approval or quality.
Four checks before choosing a provider
- Get the exact legal name, address and identity of every business receiving information or money.
- Identify the service: counseling, management, lending, settlement, legal advice or referrals. Ask what authorization, if any, it needs where you live.
- Check current official records and ask the appropriate agency about uncertainty. Check a lawyer with the appropriate state bar if legal representation is offered.
- Request written fees, cancellation terms, creditor risks and actual states served. Selecting a state in a form does not verify eligibility.
Deadlines need individual advice
Collection time limits, court deadlines, exemptions and bankruptcy rules depend on facts and jurisdiction. This directory does not calculate them. Find legal aid or qualified counsel. See attorney-based options and our national resources.
