Keep debt letters and questions in order
Source: https://freshfinancialsolutions.com/debt-paperwork-organizer/ — Page updated November 5, 2026. General education; not a professional review date.
Keep the original letter, its envelope and a record of what you do next. A simple log can help you explain the situation to a creditor, counselor or lawyer.
Privacy: the organizer runs in your browser and does not submit or automatically save entries. Use labels such as “Collector letter A.” Keep names, account numbers, case numbers, scans and detailed financial records out of the tool. Print or save a PDF only on a device you trust.
Organize your paperwork
Your entries stay in this open page. This tool does not save or send them. Closing or reloading clears them. Do not enter Social Security numbers, account numbers, passwords, or other sensitive details. A PDF you choose to save is a separate file on your device.
Keep a simple checklist of papers you want to find or review. Dates start blank. A reminder you enter is your own planning date, not a legal deadline. The tool does not calculate or check deadlines and sends no reminders.
If you receive court papers, promptly find qualified legal help. Do not wait for a reminder or an informal creditor reply.
General education only. For advice about your situation, speak with a qualified financial, legal, or tax professional.
Sort by what the document actually is
- Bill or statement: check the amount, period covered and payment instructions.
- Collector’s validation notice: retain the entire notice and check the dispute instructions. The CFPB explains required validation information, including the dispute period shown in the notice.
- Court papers: read the court’s instructions promptly and verify the case directly with the court. Do not assume a collector conversation replaces a court response.
- Agreement or offer: keep every page, the proposed payment terms and proof of any accepted payment.
- Tax document: keep it for tax review. See the canceled-debt tax guide.
Record facts without guessing deadlines
Note when you received the document, when it was sent if shown, what it asks for and where the original is stored. You can record a date printed on the notice, but this tool does not decide the correct legal deadline. Delivery methods, court rules, holidays and the type of matter can affect it. Do not rely on a worksheet reminder to preserve your rights.
The CFPB explains why responding to a debt lawsuit matters. If there are court papers, a threatened loss of housing or a disputed deadline, seek legal help promptly. The Legal Services Corporation legal-help finder is one starting point; eligibility and availability vary.
Never mail away your only original. Avoid posting notices in public chat or sending sensitive records to our support mailbox. Our role here is educational organization, not representation or review of your case.
